6 comments on “Intelligence of siblings mapped out??

  • This isn’t generally a new finding. I took a psychology class back in high school, where, yes first borns were thought of as being better performers, not necessarily smarter. I also became the class exception to every family “rule.”
The possible reason: my parents divorced and remarried(my father several times). I was not always the oldest, and believe me, the older(first born step siblings) were not always the most intelligent, but the most stressed. (Yes, because they generally get it the hardest, because basically new parents have no idea what they are doing and make more mistakes with the oldest)
You also have to realise, as I have recently, that those with high IQ, are not the really all that smart. They seem to be good at regurgitation of information, but not to Anylise situations and respond independent of the expected response or it’s direct opposite.
In my situation : I am the first born of my parents. Yes, I am clearly the smartest, In fact, it’s been a long time since I have met someone smarter in life; and it is actually a frustration of mine; but that’s unrelated to this. My “younger” brother actually performs better in school, he can regurgitate textbooks; like he can movies, but he has no ability to handle stress or serious decision making; he just shuts down, and waits for answers to come from someone else; usually my mother.

I also have a half sister (the youngest of my fathers 3) out there somewhere in the world. Based on what I know if her, she is actually a smarter than my brother, but not nearly as fast on the uptake as me. She was raised different, for the most part separate ; especially beyond her 12th year. She has a significantly older sister(older than me). Based on psychology books : she was pretty much an only child. I think my sisters lack of uptake comes from the fact that her mother is an abundant and skilled lier and manipulator. My sister was a victim from birth. She has no solid grasp on the reality of how situations played out. Last I heard, she hated her mother, and was seeking truths, but unfortunately not with an open mind, but still making accusations based on the lies, her mother told her.

    • A friend of mine used to refer to first born children as ‘experimental’ kids. What she meant was because our parents experienced the first parental issues with us. I would say that I am not more intelligent than my siblings..one is a doctor, one is an IT specialist and two are teachers.

  • Love it, being the first born I believe this to be true and have known of this for many years, Having read quite a lot on the placement of siblings. I do believe that the first born is pushed harder to achieve when growing, the parents are able to say oh look at my child. There a more demands, more expectations…..the down side, I feel, is that I am a bloomin perfectionist, place far too much pressure on myself to achieve and feel as though I am the one expected to look after the “family”.

I once heard that when you have your first child you are always making sure everything is right, photo’s are taken galore…the second child, it all weans off a little. One realises that there is no such thing as a perfect child (or is too tired to continue with such demands on the child) and by the third child. well it’s just hey raise yourself!!

  • Hmnn…smarter and more accomplished as defined by parents doesn’t seem very scientific. A fun read with a wide potential readership but maybe not quite a tool for high-dollar business decisions. Lots of room in there for ‘nature vs. nurture’ debates. Good party discussion?..
